Palm Sunday Memories

In my Day McKelvey Mystery Series,  Day lives in the second floor apartment of an  old two-story Victorian on the Matanzas River.  While that house is fictional, I always loved the supposedly true story about an actual house  on the Matanzas, owned by a  bookie whose illegal enterprise finally landed him in jail. Soon as he was released, he used money he’d stashed from his illicit earnings to embark on a new venture. He hired local kids to scout the marshes and collect palm fronds, which he  then packaged  and shipped to churches all over the country. Northerners, especially, treasured their Palm Sunday fronds, unaware of their slightly shady source,
